Government. House,

Hongkong, 10th September, Vigd2 CC 03)

34336

With reference to my Despatch No. 389 of the

12th August last, in which I informed you of the death of Sergeant

Robertson, Assistant. Engineer in the Fire Brigade, I have the honour

to inform you that in view of the fact that there is no subordinate

officer in the Police or Fire Brigale who is considered fit for the

post except one who is unwilling to accept it, and having regard to

the impossibility of finding a qualified candidate outside the Government Service,it is in my opinion desirable that a candidate

should be specially selected in England for this post, the duties

of which necessitate special training and aptitude. This opinion is

shared by the Acting Captein Superintendent of the Police and by the

Colonial Secretary, and they consider that to obtain a suitable

officer it will be necessary to raise the pay of the post to £240

rising by £30 triennially to £300. The late occupant of the post

drew about $2333 inclusive of exchange compensation, and enjoyed

special privileges as regards leave and pension as a member of the

Police Force.

2.

The duties which the Assistant Engineer has to

perform are set forth in the printed statement attached to the

Particulars of Office transmitted herewith. But though the candidate

should possess the necessary knowledge to drive a Fire Engine the

more important. duties that he has to perform are of a nature akin to

those of what I believe is termed a Station Officer in the Metro-

politan Fire Brigade; that is to say of an officer who has immediate FIGHT HONOURABLE
